Themes of labor, domestic organization, and time run through the ongoing installation piece unseen labor. Made of more than 23 miles of cotton twine, each length was hand crocheted while multi-tasking; watching a movie with my family, in a waiting room, at a dress rehearsal, during zoom meetings. The work illustrates a paradoxical desire to be domestic and simultaneously outside of the domestic. Through the juxtaposition of sculpture, a practice of art that was one of the most exclusionary to women, and the single crochet, the most mundane and easiest beginning crochet stitch, the work exists in a liminal space, a space of continual accumulation, obsessiveness, and time. It brings a physicality and a demonstrated awareness to the unseen and frequently unpaid domestic labor of caretakers. The work is both an acknowledgement and a protest of its own existence, inseparable from the hands that made it.

The human body cannot permanently evade the effects of damage from consistent use over time, making eventual deterioration a reality. By examining the malleability of the body throughout its lifespan from fleshy newborn though the mottled inelasticity of old age, loom explores the everyday reality of aging, producing beauty in the unconventional spaces of wrinkles, folds, and biological imperfection. Created out of two thousand yards of cotton twill tape, loom is hand-dyed, woven and tied methodically together, and immersed into stiffeners including wax and resin. The irregular application and cracking of the yellow and red tinted wax mimic the darkening and wrinkling found in the maturing skin of an elderly body, The large scale of the piece leads to the immediate awareness of the physicality of the works production, highlighting the methodology of craft brought to the tangible materials.

Made of mulberry silk yarn hand dyed with foraged hickory nuts and of hand spun wool and alpaca yarn, the work was created on both an Ultimate Sweater Machine (a plastic machine knitter from the 1990's) and a homemade tapestry loom picked up at a thrift store. The material contrast of the smooth high luster silk and the dense rustic matte finish of both wool and alpaca imitate the varying textures of skin. Appearing barely held together, its structure juxtaposes the knitted stockinette stitch which is sleek and has an elegant fluid drape with a plain weave tapestry, which is durable and resists sagging but creases easily. The work is hung by synthetic elastic which will overtime dry out and stretch, intentionally hanging differently each time it is installed, the sagging, stretching and creasing mimicking the natural aging of the body.

Spindle-spun wool yarn, wool roving and thread has been crocheted, braided, and stitched into an organic form contained by meandering synthetic store-bought crocheted yarn. The work rolls and folds onto itself creating pockets and recesses giving the impression of a three-dimensional object that refuses to be laid flat.

Fabricated out of wicker, cotton twine, and clothespins each dyed with plants from my garden the work has been twisted, woven, and braided. The suspended repetition of fiber and wicker alongside the abrupt ends of cut material give the impression of fragility and ongoing disintegration
